How to plan a New Year's Eve wedding
By the Unveil team · Published October 28, 2026
Sunset times and safety guidance checked October 2026.
A New Year's Eve wedding is planned backwards from midnight. Hold the ceremony in the early evening, around half past six, get dinner and the toasts finished by about ten, and keep the dance floor full into a countdown, a toast and a kiss at twelve. Book everyone's ride home before you book the band.
The date has real advantages. Guests arrive ready to celebrate, the theme more or less picks itself, and January 1 is a public holiday in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, so nobody has to work the next morning. It also costs something. Your guests give up their own plans to come, some venues charge more or run their own party that night, taxis vanish after midnight, and in the northern hemisphere it is dark before five.
Below is a sample timeline, then the trade-offs in more detail, ideas for the midnight moment, and how to get photos of a night whose biggest moment comes five or six hours after the ceremony starts.
A sample timeline
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 3:30 pm | First look and couple portraits, in the last of the daylight |
| 6:30 pm | Ceremony |
| 7:00 pm | Cocktail hour |
| 8:00 pm | Dinner, then toasts |
| 9:45 pm | First dance, and the dance floor opens |
| 11:40 pm | Champagne poured, noisemakers handed out |
| 11:55 pm | Everyone on the floor, the band or DJ runs the countdown |
| 12:00 am | The kiss, and a toast to the year |
| 12:30 am | Late-night food |
| 1:00 am | Send-off, first shuttle leaves |
A sample for a northern-hemisphere winter. In Sydney the sun sets after eight on 31 December, so portraits move into the cocktail hour.
Work back from midnight
Midnight cannot move, so every other time is set from it. Give the last two hours before twelve to dancing and nothing else, because a countdown lands best on a floor that is already full. Before that come dinner and the toasts, which together easily fill two hours, and before that a cocktail hour. That puts the ceremony at roughly half past six.
Starting later is tempting and usually a mistake. A nine o'clock ceremony pushes dinner into the countdown, and the best man ends up racing the clock through his speech. Starting much earlier stretches the day the other way. With a three o'clock ceremony, midnight is nine hours off, and older guests and anyone paying a babysitter will have gone home before the moment you chose the date for.
Daylight decides when the portraits happen. On 31 December the sun sets at 4:38 pm in New York and at 4:01 pm in London, and the usable twilight after it lasts around half an hour. If you want portraits outside, do a first look in the afternoon and take them before the ceremony. In Sydney the evening runs the other way: sunset is at 8:09 pm, so the golden light falls during the cocktail hour, and the night is warm enough to hold the countdown outdoors.
Check the weekday as well. New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, so some guests will need the day off, and travellers may need two. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, which is the easier ask, and the following weekend gives everyone time to recover.
A camera for every guest, and an album that opens when you say.
What the date gives you, and what it costs
The case for it is easy to make. People are in the mood to celebrate before they arrive, the countdown is a climax you do not have to invent, and gold, black and sequins look right on that night in a way they rarely do in June. Every anniversary after this one also lands on a night when everyone is celebrating anyway.
The case against is mostly about your guests. You are asking them to give up their own New Year's Eve, which some will do gladly and some will not. Send save-the-dates earlier than you would for a summer date, ideally before people start making plans for the holidays, and take the declines that come back without reading anything into them.
Price and availability are the next things to ask about. Some venues charge more for the date, and some hotels and restaurants run their own ticketed party that night and will not take a wedding at all. Bands and DJs get offers for public New Year's parties too, so book early. Ask about all of it at the first viewing rather than after you have fallen for the room. If the venue is taken, a Saturday earlier in the month is the obvious fallback, and the Christmas wedding guide goes through December date by date.
Babysitters are hard to find that night. If children are not invited, expect some parents to decline or leave early. A room at the hotel with a sitter in it can solve that for the families you most want there.
Then there is the ride home. Uber describes surge pricing as what happens when more people are asking for rides than there are cars on the road, and the minutes after midnight on New Year's Day are about as clear an example as exists. Hire a shuttle or a coach with fixed departure times, put those times on your wedding website, and pick a venue with rooms on site, or a hotel within walking distance, if you can. In a northern winter, add a buffer for ice and snow on the roads, and have an indoor version of anything you planned outside.
Ideas for the midnight moment
Let the band or DJ run the countdown, with a large clock on a screen or projector so nobody is guessing from their phone. Decide in advance which song plays at twelve. A slow one gives the two of you a second first dance, and a loud one starts the second half of the party. For games and traditions that suit the hours around it, such as the Spanish twelve grapes, see our New Year's Eve party ideas.
Pour the champagne about twenty minutes early so the trays are out and every hand is full when the count starts, and have a non-alcoholic option on the same trays for drivers and anyone not drinking. Noisemakers, hats and a confetti drop are the usual extras. Ask before you buy confetti, since some venues charge to clean it up.
Sparklers need more care than they get. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says sparklers burn at about 2,000°F, hot enough to melt some metals, and that young children should never play with or light them. Use them outdoors only, keep buckets of water or sand at the exit, give them to adults, and check both the venue's rules and your local fireworks laws before ordering a box.
For something quieter, put a card at every place setting asking guests for a wish or a prediction for your first year of marriage, collect them in a box during dinner, and open it on your first anniversary, which will also be next New Year's Eve. If a lot of guests travelled, a relaxed brunch on New Year's Day gives them one more chance to see you without the noise.
Photos of a night that peaks at midnight
Photography packages usually cover a set number of hours, so count them against your timeline. A first look at half past three to a kiss at midnight is eight and a half hours before travel. If the package ends at ten, the countdown, the kiss and the sparkler exit will exist only on your guests' phones.
That is where most of them will be anyway. At midnight everyone films the countdown, in a dark room, and very few of those clips ever reach the couple. A wedding hashtag catches the ones that get posted publicly. The rest stay in camera rolls.
A shared camera collects them as they are taken. Unveil is ours: guests scan a code at their table and shoot on their own phones, and every photo goes into one album that stays locked for everyone, you included, until the time you set. The wedding preset gives each guest ten shots and runs the camera for twelve hours, so a window opened at four in the afternoon stays open until four in the morning. The wedding setup guide covers the rest of the settings.
The real decision on this night is when the album opens. We usually argue against opening it during the party, and the unlock-time guide explains why. New Year's Eve is the one wedding where we would make an exception. Set the unlock for midnight and the live wall on the venue screen counts down beside the join code all evening, so its countdown and the year's are the same one. At twelve the album plays to the room, and photos taken after that land on the wall as they develop.
The cost is that the hour after midnight happens partly on screens, as guests scroll back through the evening. If you would rather keep the dance floor, leave the unlock for New Year's Day. The preset opens the album at nine the next morning, which is early after a night that finished at one, so move it to late morning or to the start of the brunch. The time can be changed right up until the album opens.
An event is free for up to 10 guests, $14.99 for 50 and $29.99 for 100 (US pricing), paid once. You can create the event in your browser or in the app, and a free test with your partner in the week before shows you the unlock working.

Questions people ask
Around six or seven in the evening. That leaves a cocktail hour, dinner and the toasts, and still gives you an hour or more of dancing before midnight. Much earlier and the day runs long enough that guests leave before the countdown.
No, but you are asking guests to give up a night they might have planned for themselves. Tell them early, make the party worth coming to, sort out transport home, and do not take declines personally.
It can be. Some venues charge a premium for the date, others are busy with their own events, and bands and DJs have other offers that night. Ask each venue and vendor directly, since winter dates elsewhere in December and January can be cheaper.
It is the one wedding where midnight works, because the countdown is already happening. If you would rather keep phones away from the dance floor after twelve, open the album late on New Year's Day morning instead.
Whatever your invitation says, so put a dress code on it. Most couples choose formal or cocktail wear, and in a northern winter it helps to remind guests that they may be outside for photos or the send-off.
